What Happened to those Drying Days?

Hello Poetry Lovers

Yes indeed. How often do you see clothes on the line now? Our laundry rituals have changed drastically, some for the better, (no more putting shirts through mangles), but on the other hand, we’ve lost something else. Those billowing sheets hanging out and that fresh outdoor smell.

Clever poet Trisha Broomfield puts this over succinctly in her lovely detailed nostalgic piece What Happened to those Drying Days?

It’s a stunning poem, do read on….

What Happened to those Drying Days?

What happened to those drying days

those laundry flapping, flying days

when billowed sheets swelled up with pride

and whites were whiter than a bride

what happened to those drip-dry shirts

when we sewed pleats into our skirts

each sock was pegged up by the toe,

where did sunny skies all go?

Now bundled in the tumble drier

sheets have no chance to swing up higher

nor do all the clothes we wear

come back smelling of fresh air

Febreze has taken up a stance

and fresh air doesn’t stand a chance

each day has its fair share of rain

and wash days have become a pain

we wash things daily, well why not,

clothes aren’t dirty, just a spot

to mar the look, throw them in

the bulging, worn out laundry bin

I’m clinging on to times gone by

hang out my sheets, I don’t know why

when all returns are sopping wet,

I won’t give up the fresh air yet.
