Oh Cat!

Hello Poetry Lovers

Staying on the subject of animals, we turn to my favourite species. Cats natch.

While I’m not sure I want to actually be one, I do envy them a lot. Particularly my own cat, Dobby.

They get away with so much, and take it for granted. I’ve tried to express my thoughts below. Do read on….

Cat Couture

Oh you beautiful black cat,

how do you wash yourself like that?

Your coat shiny from just one elegant lick

While I pull on a dressing gown of candlewick

You look on with bored fascination

While I fill hot water into the basin

And soap over my grubby features

Yearning to be like one of God’s creatures

Who use their sandpapered tongue to stay clean

Who emerge fresh, confident and pristine

My own best coat still at the dry cleaners

High charges, ripped hems and misdemeanours

While you, cat, have a coat grown by nature

Given to you by a benevolent creator

Why can’t my outerwear be ‘on the house’?

I would be any animal – except a mouse!

HEM 2026

Isn’t it true, PL’s?! They carry their wardrobe with them, and have minimal maintenance!

What animal would You like to be? Answers on a postcard please….

Thanks for tuning in, Poetry Lovers. We’ll be back with more poetry shenanigans real soon….
